Polymarket Gives Bitcoin Price a 64% Chance of Reaching $80K This Month

Key Takeaways

What the $80,000 Market Actually Asks

Polymarket’s “Will Bitcoin reach $80,000 in September?” market resolves yes if even a single one-minute Binance BTC/USDT candle prints a high at or above $80,000 before 11:59 p.m. ET on Sept. 30.

The market was created on Sept. 7, and its rules state plainly that price action before creation is not considered. Bitcoin had already traded at $81,265 on Sept. 4 and $80,329 on Sept. 7, which settled the earlier versions of the same question as yes.

A quick look at the full board and the shape of trader sentiment becomes clearer.

  • $82,500 prices at 39.5%
  • $85,000 at 23.5%
  • $87,500 at 13.5%
  • $90,000 at 8.5%.

The downside rungs are heavier. A dip to $75,000 is bid at 68.5%, $72,500 at 40.5% and $70,000 at 22.5%. Only below $65,000, at 7.5%, does the downside get cheaper than the corresponding move up.

$163 From a Yes And What Lies Ahead

Earlier today, bitcoin ran to an intraday high of $79,505, coming up just $495 short (roughly two-tenths of a percent) of fulfilling the contract. The $5.17 million in total volume across the September price event, backed by about $1.46 million in liquidity, makes this one of the more actively traded bitcoin price markets on the platform, so the valuation is indicative of real positioning rather than a thin book.

Bitcoin price action over the past 24 hours.

Moreover, it bears mentioning that earlier this month Bitcoin.com News flagged three dates standing between bitcoin’s price and a resolution of its range, namely:

  • Jobless claims on Sept. 10
  • August CPI on Sept. 11
  • The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on Sept. 15-16.

Two of these milestones have passed, and both landed on the hawkish side. The August core inflation reading came in hotter than forecast, and rate-hike odds jumped rather than eased.

That leaves the Fed decision, as a hike would tighten conditions into a market that spent August running hard, and it is the single event most capable of resolving these contracts in either direction before Sept. 30. Interesting couple of weeks ahead, to say the least!
